I had an insatiable curiosity that I let wane starting in my early twenties. There are a few reasons that contributed to that decline in my want to learn that I might write about in a future post, but for now, understand that I loved to learn about the world when I was younger. Discovery and curiosity were traits that I valued and identified deeply with as a kid.
This love of learning and sense of adventure lead me into all sorts of hobbies and activities. I learned to play guitar and loved to hike and fish. I skateboarded, played soccer and lacrosse, made art, started a band with some friends, and tried my hand at just about anything I could. I lived for that joy of discovery and feeling of excitement at unlocking some new potential obsession.
However, I let the curious learner part of my personality fade as I entered the "real world." I dropped hobbies, sold my guitars, and spent more time inside and withdrawn. That lead to a pretty unfulfilling existence. On the outside I was doing realtively well, but inside there was a distinct feeling that something was missing. A piece of who I was had fallen away.
Fast forward to recently. I realized what that missing piece was- that feeling of discovery that I enjoyed so much when I was younger. Inspired by a few makers and creators on the internet I begain to explore again. I picked up a camera, dusted off my guitar, started to learn more about coding and infosec- in short, I started to learn again. I also started to read and follow some minimal blogs (like the ones on Bear) and thought, "Why not start a blog?" Starting a blog was always one of those, "I'll get to it later" items I would get to in the nebulous "future." Well, that later is now!
This is not going to be a how-to for anything I do. I don't pretend to have the skills or knowledge to show others how to do what I will attempt. The Analog Hobbyist is going to serve as a chronicle of the journey to rekindle that love of learning and creation I had when I was younger. A combination journal/bucket list/showcase of projects, I'm hoping this blog will serve a two-fold purpose- to keep myself accountable in keeping up the creative drive while pushing myself beyond my comfort zone to create, learn, and discover.
If that sounds appealing to you, give The Analog Hobbyist a follow and let's work togther to be a little bit better every day.
