Ask HN: Is paywall web better than ads-supported web?

I'm old enough to remember that most services on the web were free and supported by ads.

Services also didn't need you to log in because they valued total page views over collecting data and upselling subscriptions.

I felt like the web was better in that era and I wish we could go back.
