Ask HN: Why hasn't the Gemini protocol gained more popularity?

Since we are rightfully concerned about the current status of the web, which diverged from its initial, late 80s - early 90s direction, why isn't Gemini protocol more widespread, at least among geeks and nerds, since it offers exactly what the old web was all about: and open way to deliver (and consume) content as text and hyperlinks?
