On October 21, 2025, Politecnico di Milano presented the italian Atlas of cyclist fatalities and serious injuries, the most detailed mapping of cycling accidents ever created in Italy. The project is the result of a study by the Competence Centre on Anti-Fragile Territories (CRAFT). The research group, led by Paolo Bozzuto from the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies (DAStU), offers five interactive, freely accessible dashboards that analyze cycling accidents from 2014 to 2023.
The database collects and filters detailed information on accidents occurring in every Italian municipality, based on ISTAT data on road accidents resulting in serious injuries or fatalities. In particular, the accidents from 2022 and 2023 have been precisely geolocated, allowing for an accurate mapping unique in the Italian context.
This innovative approach represents a paradigm shift in the analysis of cycling safety, providing an essential tool for urban planning and the design of targeted interventions on road infrastructure. The dashboards allow users to explore data on accident dynamics, severity, mortality, geographic distribution, and the relationship between accident rates and the spread of cycling in Italian provinces and regions.
