Community Notes contributor is an antivirus startup?

X has promoted Community Notes as a tool to put content moderation in the hands of everyday users. The feature, first launched in 2021, has since been widely copied by other platforms.

To its credit, X has made a lot of the underlying data on note ratings and status open to the public. But aside from a few vignettes, we know very little about who is actually participating in the program. Contributors are given bird-related pseudonyms and can’t personalize their profiles with information about their motivations and background.

Now, Indicator can reveal that the single most active Community Notes user is tied to a cybersecurity startup called Web3 Antivirus. The company uses an automated process to publish notes on tweets pushing crypto scams. Alex Dulub, the founder of Web3 Antivirus, told me that the goal is to help users and to fill a gap left by “the limited responsiveness of X’s support and technical teams” to such threats.
