External Secrets Operator resumes releases

What we would like to decide here today, that we would like to continue releasing two weeks from now. More precisely the first release would be on 22nd of September.

Main decision points:

  • We have a LOT of PRs now merged. It's going to be a massive release as is, the further we go the further the impact will be, which is fine, it's just a point to consider
  • Not releasing is starting to hurt the project more than the benefits it gave. The decision was a good one, because now we have a larger community and many people who joined and would like to contribute which is fantastic, but now it's on us to move forward
  • People's situation changes. Some of the maintainers are now on partial company time, which helps alleviate some of the stress maintenance caused. ( of course that could end at any point in time ).
  • We need to show that the project is alive an active
  • Regardless of what CNCF says and does, we need to keep this project going

Concerns to consider

While continuing is something we can / should do, we also need to consider that it brings an impact of uncertainty. People will think everything is fine and move on and not contribute in the way they said they would.

The single most urgent concern that we need to tackle and figure out a plan for is: What do we do if this happens again?

People will leave. Some will drop out. Support stops. What's our plan for preventing this situation and what's our plan in case the situation arises again? We can't pull this card again, so we need to be sure that we have a backup plan.

We also need to coordinate this effort with the CNCF because ultimately ESO is a CNCF project. And they need to step up and lend us a hand in promoting, and helping keep the project alive and be active part of it. Because this project IS being used by a great many people and companies and does matter in the public eye of what's happening to it / with it.

Notes on plans after we start releasing

  • we need to start onboarding people who said they would help
  • create a timeline and a roadmap on the project board

Vote

With that, dear maintainers, please cast your votes for the suggested release time. Regardless of the outcome we will work on achieving the items in the concerns section!!
