It seems like Congress should sue the Administration over funds impoundment. It's happening all over the government and is blatantly unconstitutional.

Congress actually doing its job? Well, I never!

SC keeps letting Trump do this
...the White House and its Office of Management and Budget, led by Russ Vought, has indicated that in absence of Appropriations legislation it is planning to take measures that would implement the Presidents Budget Request.
This is wrong from first principles. In the absence of authorized appropriations, the White has jack shit to spend. Their credit cards are cut off. The account is empty.
Full stop.
I will be VERY surprised if NASA is still around after a year.
In case you hadn't noticed, Ranking Members of the House, but "a fringe, extremist ideology emanating from the White House" describes much of the Federal government these days...
jagerz
Smack-Fu Master, in training
It is entirely the responsibility of Congress to set spending levels for the federal government
2025 seems to disagree
impounding is illegal and the GOP has let trump get away with it over and over again
I will be VERY surprised if NASA is still around after a year.
doesn't really matter what congress does or if they go through with the planned cuts.
nasa isn't something that can be turned on or off, the trump budget would make it so they have a decade of no missions in the pipeline, no current flying missions once their budget runs out, and shut down all existing legacy missions that are basically free science now.
If only there were a solution to a wildly out-of-line executive branch not following the law. OH WAIT. THERE IS. Impeach and remove this clown and his entire fucking circus from office.
Of all the unforgivable things the Trump regime has done, one I was not expecting was putting me and Ted Cruz on the same side of an issue.
Gross. Just... gross.
I need a shower.
Please consider that some people may have just eaten when you put Ted Cruz' picture on an article. Thanks.

Which leaves them doing what, exactly? Huffing frozen methane?
Be it NASA or anything else, I simply want to see Russ Vought get b-slapped from the Hill on something. Hopefully multiple somethings, but I'm not getting my hopes up.
A letter asking him to promise to follow the law… Truly congress is both foolish and weak.
He’s pointedly indicating he’ll violate the law of the land. Remove him from office and start over.
Congress getting pissed means nothing. Have some balls and do something about it. Impeachment and removal sounds good to me.
This week Congress struck back. But they may not have the final word.
Has there been a military coup we haven't heard about?
Otherwise, Congress absolutely has the final word. They can hold hearings. They can update laws. And they can impeach anyone they need to in the executive or judiciary who is blatantly ignoring both those laws and the constitution.
If Congress chooses not to act, then that is their final word.

I do like that man Ted Cruz
I do like his pro-NASA views
I do like...
No, no, no, I can't do it
I tried, but I can't think of anything else good to say about him
After you with the shower

What makes you think the military needs to be involved?
Planetary Society has been doing a lot of good work, on shoestring budget, lobbying the Congress for more planetary science, and (hopefully) it will pay off when it matters
Funny how a bag of shit would suddenly look attractive if in the same frame with Ted Cruz.
What makes you think the military needs to be involved?
Because, short of holding a gun to Congress's heads, however Congress chooses to handle this is still an actual choice and they don't get to pass responsibility off to someone else.
While nice to see some people in congress fight back it would be a lot nicer if it was on things that actually directly have an impact on a lot of the population such as medicare, education, immigration, tariffs, etc.
I'm not against NASA at all and this is a GOOD thing, but it is also pretty sad that the only thing congress seems to be willing to defend even slightly is something that directly supports (mostly) military contractors rather than the public at large.

Okay, so what happens if Congress passes a law, Trump disobeys it, and SCOTUS allows it? How does the military have to factor into that?
And what happens if SCOTUS doesn't allow it and Trump continues to disobey? How does the military have to factor into that?

I agree, but will take whatever we can get. If congress rolls over on this then the legislature is dead and so is our government as we knew it. I knew there would be conflict at some point, I just wasn’t sure where enough contracts would be involved to finally get congress’ tails up.
I don't like agreeing with ANYTHING this White House wants to do, but I have to agree SLS needs to GO!!!!
Yes, a strongly worded letter or two should set those scofflaws in the White House straight.
If Congress chooses not to act, then that is their final word.
If the Republicans continue letting the Executive have its way, there won't be any Congress left. Fascinatingly, this is the stated objective and they don't appear to steer from it.

Oh there will still be a congress left, it'll be populated by brainless shitposting MAGA influencers and rubber stamp whatever Trump tells them to do... y'know for legitimacy
"NASA appears to be acting in accordance with a fringe, extremist ideology."
Well, that is what the american people voted for. ![]()
Sprinkling jobs across every state to earn national buy-in for NASA appears to still be helping.
I’m not fond of the pork (e.g. Senate Launch System) but I’ll grasp at the straws that’re there.
This is what it takes for Congress to finally do its goddamned job and pass a budget on time, rather than it just being a matter of course like it should be. Jesus.
Does anyone else ever pull up the Ars frontpage on a Friday afternoon, look at the top image (I’m in classic mode), and think “$&:?, I’m going to have to see this every time I pull the site up for the rest of the weekend”?
Man ... this is going to get ugly and we haven't seen nothin yet
This is the thing that gets them to start caring about the power of the purse‽ Nevermind all those other agencies that have been gutted and seen funding withheld. I'm for it, but it does feel a bit late.

Don't disagree at all, but defending the military and adjacent industries as a priority over defending the people has been a bipartisan affair for pretty much the entirety of our history.
EDIT: clarity

The Roberts court has basically said that the only power Congress has over the Executive (at least a Republican one) is impeachment. If Congress continues to choose not to impeach, that is them making a choice, and is fully their responsibility.

You’d have to impeach him, his VP, the majority of the SCOTUS, remove his cabinet, and then maybe. Otherwise you’re just picking a dandelion from the weed patch.
