I'm incredibly excited to share that MotorManage, a free, offline-first motorcycle maintenance tracking app I've been building from the ground up, officially launched on Google Play Store last weekend! This milestone represents about a year of business development, countless hours of coding, and a deep passion for solving a problem every motorcycle owner faces: keeping track of maintenance in the digital age.
For Android users, the MotorManage motorcycle tracking app is now available for download, with our Rebel plan offering free access to essential features. iOS riders, I haven't forgotten about you, the iOS version is coming in the next few weeks and I couldn't be more excited to bring this motorcycle maintenance tracking experience to the entire riding community.
Let me take you through the journey of how MotorManage went from an idea to a fully functional Android app launch, and what's coming next.
Why I built a Motorcycle Maintenance Tracking App
Like many of you, I've always been passionate about motorcycles. I started out with and old (95) and cheap Suzuki GSX600 as my first bike which came with a lot of problems, and at some point i even had to replace the entire engine because a piece of the valves ended up inside the engine after pushing this bike to it's limit driving for 16 hours . So as my maintenance schedules became more complex, I realized I was managing everything through a messy combination of paper notebooks, random phone notes, and fading receipts in a folder for which i occasionally forget where I left it.
The breaking point came when getting my next bike, a Honda NC750x (2014). This bike has served me so amazingly well for many years, I love doing the maintenance on the bike myself simply out of interest, but generally I would forget about certain parts like the clutch cable of some liquids until it was too late. I thought, "There has to be a better way for motorcycle owners to track this stuff digitally." I searched the app stores for a comprehensive motorcycle maintenance app that could handle detailed parts tracking, work offline, and give me a complete picture of my motorcycle. However, nothing quite fit what I needed.
So, like any developer with a problem to solve, I decided to build it myself.
What started as a simple maintenance log quickly evolved into something much more ambitious: a digital motorcycle garage where riders could track every part, every service and every mile with the level of detail mechanics use, but accessible for everyday riders. I wanted MotorManage to be the app I wished existed when I started riding.
The vision was clear: build the best motorcycle tracking app that works offline, respects riders' data, and grows with their garage. And all of this should be available to anyone, not locked behind a paywall or hiding behind multiple advertisements you have to watch to continue.
The Development Journey: From Idea to Launch
Building a motorcycle maintenance tracking app from scratch as a solo developer meant making critical technical decisions early on. I chose Flutter for the mobile development framework because I wanted to write the code once and deploy to both Android and iOS without sacrificing performance or user experience. This decision has proven invaluable as we now prepare for the iOS release.
The Parts Hierarchy Problem
One of the biggest technical challenges was designing the parts tracking system. Motorcycles aren't simple machines, they have complex hierarchies of parts (categories, sub-parts, individual components), and riders need to track everything from chain wear to brake pad thickness to oil change intervals. I wanted the app to handle this complexity while remaining intuitive for casual users.
The solution? A flexible parts hierarchy system that lets users drill down from major categories like "Engine" to specific components like "Oil Filter" or "Spark Plugs" each with customizable mileage settings and wear tracking along with the option to add custom parts to the list. In this first public version, the parts list is quite standard with some small variations on parts based on the information available about a specific model (eg. chain vs cardan). But the next development steps are to improve this core functionality with more variable parts for different models and different maintenance schedules for different types of bikes like adventure, race and dirtbikes.
Technical Challenges and Solutions
Another critical decision was making MotorManage an offline motorcycle app. Riders don't always have reliable internet connection, for example in garages, on road trips, in remote areas. Full offline functionality wasn't optional; it was essential. Implementing offline first architecture with sync capabilities meant wrestling with data conflicts and ensuring data integrity across devices. This resulted in a caching layer for updates, that checks if there is an internet connection available, and if so, sends out the update and checks for any version conflicts. So that when you're sharing your motorcycle's data with a mechanic through the sharing feature, any changes made by the mechanic will end up back on your device when there is an internet connection available.
The development process wasn't linear. There were moments of breakthrough and moments of frustration. But each obstacle taught me something valuable about building production ready mobile apps and, more importantly, about what riders actually need in a motorcycle app.
By the time we reached launch day last weekend, MotorManage had evolved from a simple maintenance logger into a comprehensive motorcycle garage management platform, complete with the unique "Speedy" feature for speed based audio control while riding, a rider-specific innovation I hadn't originally planned but felt like a good addition for automatically adding the distance you drive to a selected motorcycle inside the app to reduce the amount of "manual" updates that you perform without an expensive tracking device.
Key Features That Make MotorManage Different
MotorManage isn't just another motorcycle maintenance app, it's built specifically for how riders actually use their bikes. Here's what makes it stand out:
Complete Garage Management: Track multiple motorcycles with detailed part hierarchies. Whether you have one bike or a full garage, MotorManage gives you a digital overview of every motorcycle's mechanical status. The motorcycle parts tracking system lets you monitor everything from major components to small consumables.
True Offline Functionality: This offline motorcycle app works completely without internet connection. Log maintenance, update part conditions, add new bikes – all without needing cell signal. When you're back online, everything syncs seamlessly with the cloud.
Parts Monitoring Intelligence: Track part condition, wear rates, and replacement schedules with customizable mileage settings. Know when your chain needs replacement, when your next oil change is due and when your clutch cable is about to snap (been there). All based on actual usage data.
The Speedy Feature: A rider-specific innovation that automatically adjusts your music or audio volume based on your riding speed. It's one of those features you didn't know you needed until you try it. Or in my personal case, one you might miss when switching between different intercom systems (Cardo Freecom to a Ruroc Shockwave for example).
Free Motorcycle App with Premium Options: The Rebel plan gives you free access to track up to 2 motorcycles with all the essential features. Eventually the King premium plan unlocks unlimited motorcycles and advanced features for serious riders and collectors. This is still a work in progress, so if you'd like to add more motorcycles in the app right now already, sit tight just a little longer and see how you like the app with two of your motorcycles right now. However, I believe in providing good value while keeping all the core and most important features free, to keep everyone safely and without mechanical breakdowns on the road.
This combination makes MotorManage the best motorcycle maintenance app for Android and soon also iOS riders who want professional-level tracking without professional complexity.
What's Coming Next: iOS Release and Future Features
The Google Play Store launch is just the beginning. Over the next few weeks, I'm finalizing the iOS motorcycle app version to bring MotorManage to iPhone users. iOS riders can join the waitlist at motormanage.app, or follow our social channels (instagram) for updates.
Beyond the iOS release, I'm actively developing several features that will make MotorManage even more powerful:
- Payment Integration: Seamless subscription management for King premium plan
- Advanced Analytics: Visualize your maintenance spending, track cost per mile, identify patterns
- Enhanced Parts Visualization: Better durability tracking and replacement predictions
- Data Export: Full maintenance history reports for insurance, resale, or personal records
Looking further ahead, I'm working on expanding the MotorManage ecosystem. But before that, I want to ensure the core of the app is solid and provides real value to every rider out there who's like me and having a hard time keeping track of every part of their precious machine.
This is a marathon, not a sprint, and I'm committed to continuously improving the motorcycle tracking app based on user feedback and real-world needs.
