Quotes,GIFs & ImagesQuotes,If there's one person in the world who genuinely loves us unconditionally, and is always there with us our mother. A mother’s love is one of the most powerful forces in the world— it is selfless, unconditional, and unwavering.

From the moment her child is born (and even before), a mother embarks on a lifelong journey of love and sacrifice. Her time, energy, sleep, dreams, and personal needs often take a back seat to the well-being of her children and family. She becomes the first teacher, the first nurse, the first friend, and the strongest protector of her child. And so to honour and celebrate mothers and all they do for their children, every year Mother's Day is celebrated across the world-- generally on the second Sunday of May.

It is a dedicated occasion to honour mothers, mother figures, and their immense contribution to families and society. It’s a day to express love, appreciation, and gratitude for all the labour-- emotional, physical, and mental -- they invest throughout their lives.

While one day is not enough to capture all that mothers do, Mother's Day offers a symbolic moment to reflect on their value and impact on everyone's life.

On this day, children and families write notes expressing their love for their mother, motherly figures, give them gifts, and spend quality time with them. It is a day to make them feel special and appreciate all that they do for us.History and origins of Mother's DayThe modern celebration of Mother’s Day has roots in both ancient traditions and more recent historical events. In ancient Greece and Rome, festivals were held to honour mother goddesses such as Rhea and Cybele.

Similarly, in the UK, “Mothering Sunday” emerged during the 16th century as a day when servants were given time off to visit their mothers and attend church with them. However, the official Mother’s Day as we know it today was founded in the United States. The movement was led by Anna Jarvis, who wanted to create a day that honoured the sacrifices mothers make for their children. After her own mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, passed away in 1905, Anna campaigned to make Mother's Day a national holiday.

Her efforts succeeded when, in 1914, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.Ironically, Anna Jarvis later became disillusioned with the commercialism that overtook the holiday. She had envisioned a day of heartfelt appreciation rather than store-bought cards and gifts. Her concern highlights the importance of making the celebration personal and sincere—focused on gratitude, not consumerism.

When is Mother’s Day celebrated?

While the essence of Mother's Day remains the same across the world, it is celebrated on different dates worldwide. For instance, a majority of countries, including the US and India, celebrate it on the second Sunday of May. While some other countries-- like the United Kingdom-- celebrate Mothering Sunday on the fourth Sunday of Lent, which changes every year depending on the Easter calendar. In India, it will be celebrated on May 11, 2025.
