We saw something neat at HPE Discover 2025. Kioxia had its new CD9P SSD on the show floor and was showing it compared to the CD8P, like the Kioxia CD8P-R 30.72TB PCIe Gen5 NVMe SSD we reviewed. The big change is the new BiCS FLASH generation 8 technology.
Kioxia CD9P Showing the Power of New BiCS FLASH at HPE Discover 2025
As a quick recap, here is the spec table for the Kioxia CD9P.

We also saw the drive in person as they were on the show floor.

In the floor demo, the CD9P was running side-by-side against the CD8P. You can easily see the performance delta even though both are PCIe Gen5 NVMe SSDs, especially on the 4K Random Write IOPS that are more than double the CD8P’s performance.

Apparently, Patrick asked about this. The controller on the two drives is the same. A lot of times, we see data center drives with new controllers and NAND released in tandem, but this is a drive that is being released with the big difference being the NAND. The CD9P SSD is using newer BiCS FLASH generation 8 technology. That is what is driving the performance difference.
Final Words
This was just a cool one that Patrick saw on a recent trip. He is out for the 4th of July holiday and feeling very unwell, so I figured I would give him a break. Still, it was great to see the new drive running and to just get an easy answer to what has changed. It is pretty neat to see a new NAND generation lead to this much of a performance gain.
Hopefully, we will find one of these drives through our sources like we did with the CD8P so we can show you the difference. In the meantime, at least we saw the performance live on the HPE Discover 2025 show floor.
