Been exploring Safari extensions on iOS lately and wondering which ones are actually worth using. I’ve tried a few—like 1Blocker, Noir, and Super Agent—but I feel like I’m missing some great ones.

What are you using daily? Any hidden gems or must-haves I should know about?

I can also vouch for Wipr 2 as an OG Wipr user from back in the day.

Oddly, ever since I updated to iOS 18.5 on my iPhone 16 Pro Max, AdGuard (Lifetime Premium) started showing 3-4 sponsored ads that take up more than the entire screen whenever I do a google search. Coincidentally, I immediately checked adblock-tester.com when this happened and AdGuard now was scoring 97% instead of 100%, and the one category that it was now failing at just so happened to be banner ads, fwiw.

I tried clearing Safari cookies, tried it in Private Browsing, and reinstalled AdGuard, used only the default filter lists, and made sure the Filter unblocking search ads and self promotion filter list was disabled, but no dice.

On the other hand, both OG Wipr and Wipr 2 scored 100% still and blocked all sponsored results ads on Google Search. Same with Brave and Orion Browser with their built-in adblockers.

Yes, it seems to. I subscribe to a few ad-heavy channels that I only watch on desktop for this reason (I can block their ads).

None showed me an ad with uBlock Origin Lite running. I have two other ad blockers (AdGuard and Wipr 2) but they were disabled for this test. AdGuard is a good product and blocks ads in other apps, not just Safari. Wipr 2 is made by a good independent developer and I won't disparage it, and for the record, I believe it blocks YouTube ads as well. Plus, it is constantly updated. I've been using uBO for many, many years, but Wipr 2 is a solid contender. I just got in the TestFlight (linked elsewhere in the thread) today, so there are still slots open. But, if it fills up, Wipr 2 is just $5 or thereabouts. Certainly better than paying $10-15 a month for YouTube Premium, especially when, in both cases, you still get the in-video ads (sponsors and such — I skip these as well on the desktop with SponsorBlock).

This is actually a great question:

  1. Everything is in one place: they probably want to simplify to make everything go to one channel. Unlike having a dedicated extension store like Google

  2. Leverage existing channel: when everything goes through the app store, apple don’t have to create or segment a team to review the extension to ensure the security - it just doesn’t make sense in terms of cost either

  3. Sandboxing: every application is sanboxed on ios to ensure a malicious app have the least chance to spread the malware. By doing so for extension, it ensure there are no loop hole in the security design

  4. Developer API: the developer will have more tools to do more

TLDR apple does this to streamline experience and security by asking developer to submit through the app store

This is my powerpack 💥 and here’s what these extensions do

Baking Soda - For clean player

Chatgpt - i guess you know…

Wipr - Blocks YT ads but sometimes it is tricky, however the developer recently released a newer version (Wipr 2)

Freedom - for blocking apps, websites (or whole internet) during focus sessions

Raindrop.io - bookmark manager

Vinegar - app blocker

Noir - for brutal dark mode

One sec - for mindful interventions when long use of selected apps/websites + app limits, morning countdown that prevents you using mobile or apps immediately after you wake up, pornsite(s) detox and a lot more

Ps I also edited my original post for more clarity

1Blocker: Great blocking lists and granular control of them. Probably the most comprehensive extension with detailed user control on the App Store for this. (In the past I’ve used AdBlock Plus but I didn’t like it. I’ve heard good things about Wipr 2 but no experience with it. Also, I checked out uBlock Origin Lite’s beta app but seems very basic with no control at the moment.)

Edit (a few days later): Tested Wipr 2, like others maybe the lists are great I have done a thorough test but there’s no granular control, just enable to lists and let it do its thing. I still prefer 1Blocker.

Baking Soda & Vinegar: strips back video overlays for websites and YouTube on Safari to normal html videos. Clean, neat and simple

Currenzy: Convert currencies on the website

Noir: Brings Dark Mode to websites that don’t have it

AMP Shockwave: removes AMP pages and shows native web pages

Web Inspector: Proper web tools on mobile Safari, I’ve been wanting this for years. Great to finally have it

Adguard works great, you can get the lifetime license in stacksocial pretty cheap, i bought it a couple years ago i think for 20 or 30 usd for the fimily license

OpenTok - view tiktok videos in safari

PiP - mostly for my iphone, enables pip for youtube in safari.

AdGuard is the only one I absolutely couldn't do without because there's no way I'm going on the internet without an ad blocker.

I also use Noir because it's great having dark mode in Safari.

But that's it for me.

Just as efficient as on a computer. It's just a script that skips parts of YouTube videos to skip product advertising, but you can also set it to skip the intro, parts without music and etc. It has a huge base, so don't worry.

Don't confuse this with AdBlock. This works for content that is part of a video. For typical adverts I recommend AdGuard Pro, as it blocks not only in the browser but also outside as well.

To watch YouTube via Safari, don't forget PiPifier, which prevents youtube from stopping when you leave Safari and on a locked screen.
