Music, teeth, and AI but not all at once

Hi! It’s Erik. My Slack bio says, "I'm probably taller than you.", but other than that, I’m a husband, father, and owner of two dogs. For the last 10+ years, I have swum in data waters. Currently leading engineering teams at Bolt, focusing on making Bolt's data usable to everyone. These letters will contain bits and pieces I’ve noticed over the last few weeks.

The world simply needed yet another newsletter. Nope. Actually, I did.

Life sometimes feels like a computer game, but there is no easy option to save the game at a checkpoint.

This is where this newsletter would come in. I’ll simply dump some ideas, thoughts, links here to have a reference of point in time to what was on my mind or which weird articles I read recently. No hidden agenda with it.

Here we go.

  1. If I were to start a public DJ set, I’d probably start with this song. - I recently picked it up, and I'm not really sure why I’m vibing with it so much. Possibly because the piano part reminds me of Windows XP booting up. Feel free to play it while reading.

  1. The Shift Left Data Manifesto - My LinkedIn feed has seen this long-read quite many times, but for me, it’s primarily showing the importance of connecting Data Producers and Data Consumers so that we wouldn’t need as many middle layers as we have right now in the data field. Well written, don’t copy and paste it into your Chatgpt to summarise it.

  1. Popcorn and movie nights are not the same anymore - I learned about power flossers for home use a few years ago, but after my wife bought one, it made so much sense that now I can’t go back. There is no promo for any particular one; just try it out, and you’ll know.

  2. Are we sleeping on Gemini? - For a few years, Google's steps competing with Claude and ChatGPT have been a source of many memes but not much value. However, with recent launches, the paradigm has truly changed, and Gemini is now, if not the best, then on par with the others.

  3. Just getting started? - If I were to wrap up my university studies or look for summer plans as a student, then I’d truly look for Bolt’s new internship and graduate programs. The talent who will lead this group is world-class.

  4. We’re still in the early days with software - I was trying to find a nice/useful financial software for my wife's business. The amount of tools is staggering, but it’s crazy how they all fall short of simply aggregating the data from multiple sources and automatically grouping the data, not even talking about advanced AI use cases or forecasting. So many opportunities to innovate.
