For those not liking the direction of the Linux desktop with its Wayland-first focus, the Rust-written Redox OS has begun rolling out X11 support within its Orbital display server.

The monthly Redox OS report is out for the month of May and it's quite exciting for X11 fans... X11 support has begun to be implemented within the Oribtal display server so that X11 apps will be able to work gracefully on Redox without display-related changes. However, at the moment there isn't yet any graphics acceleration working for theX11 apps on Redox OS. But xeyes and other X11 software is beginning to see support:

Another big milestone for Redox OS during the month of May is seeing an initial GTK3 toolkit port.

Some of the other work over the past month to this open-source Rust operating system includes Mesa EGL porting, boot fixes, Raspberry Pi support fixes, PS/2 driver enhancements, and updates to many of the available programs on Redox OS. Redox OS documentation has also been improved upon too.

Those wanting to learn more about the recent Redox OS enhancements can do so via the Redox-OS.org blog. Redox OS is also looking to hire a EU-based developer for a one-year position to work on the operating system thanks to grants/funding.
