Coal falls to all time monthly low in June in the EU at just 6%
Coal dropped to a record low of 6.1% of EU electricity in June 2025 as a result of renewables’ strong performance, down from 8.8% in June 2024. Fossil fuels in total were less than a quarter of EU power in June (23.6%), just above the record low of 22.9% in May 2024.
The two countries that account for the vast majority of EU coal power both saw record lows in June, with Germany generating just 12.4% of its power from coal, and Poland 42.9%. Four other countries recorded their lowest ever month of coal generation in June: Czechia (17.9%), Bulgaria (16.7%), Denmark (3.3%) and Spain (0.6%), which is approaching coal phase-out.
Ten EU countries had zero coal generation in June, as coal use continues to decline and coal phase-outs continue. Ireland closed its last coal plant on 20 June 2025, while Spain and Slovakia have also announced phase-out dates for this year.
