With the launch of the SteamOS Legion Go S, there are now two devices officially supported on SteamOS. The other being Valve’s Steam Deck. Support for the Lenovo handheld has been building up, and people have already started getting their hands on the new device.

While a Windows version was released early this year, it took a few months for the SteamOS variant to be ready. We imagine that much of that hinged on support from Valve, and that is now available in SteamOS 3.7.8. On top of that, for handheld owners who want to try out SteamOS on other devices, Valve has put together a handy guide with the updated SteamOS recovery image.

SteamOS on other AMD-powered handhelds

In the SteamOS 3.7.8 patch notes, you’ll notice that “Improved support for other AMD-powered handhelds (like the ROG Ally and original Legion Go)” is advertised. Even the MSI Claw has made the switch to AMD hardware, with a new model announced at Computex this week. While implementation doesn’t equate to the same level of compatibility as the Lenovo Legion Go S, it’s clear that Valve is actively working to make SteamOS a more open platform.

Valve states that it is “continually working to improve compatibility with other devices”. So far, this is targeted towards handheld devices with AMD hardware and an NVMe drive. Keep in mind that support for these other devices should not be considered final, at least not until they get an official ‘Powered by SteamOS’ badge of approval. SteamOS compatibility ratings were recently rolled out to give users a more Steam Deck-like experience.
