USDC on Shopify

Shopify is joining forces with Coinbase and Stripe to bring frictionless, secure stablecoin payments to merchants around the world

Stablecoins are reshaping the way money moves around the world. Over the past few years, stablecoins like USDC have grown to over a trillion dollars in monthly payment volume, trusted by users around the globe. And today, Shopify is excited to partner with Coinbase and Stripe to bring stablecoins to everyday commerce.

Announcing USDC on Shopify Payments

Now in early access, merchants can accept USDC from customers globally on the Base network, using their existing payment and order fulfillment flows—no integrations or new gateways required. Customers can pay with USDC on Base from hundreds of supported crypto wallets, on guest checkout and with Shop Pay.

Merchants will receive their local currency by default, with no foreign transaction or exchange fees—or they can choose to claim USDC directly into their own wallet. Thanks to our ongoing partnership with Stripe, this makes accepting crypto payments even easier for merchants, who have more flexibility in managing their funds.

Why stablecoins matter for entrepreneurs

Stablecoins have evolved a lot over the past few years, and are now positioned to transform how commerce happens around the world. Three key innovations came together to make this possible.

Stability without compromise: Unlike cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin or Ether, whose value can widely fluctuate, stablecoins such as USDC are backed 1:1 by US Dollar reserves, and maintain a constant value. When customers pay in USDC, merchants get a currency that’s safe, reliable, and easy to exchange.

Fast, borderless transactions: Base (built by Coinbase) is an ultra-fast and affordable network that has emerged as a great way for moving money. Think of it like a credit card network, but for digital payments—an increasingly accepted standard.

Effortless checkouts: Buyer wallets, which allow users to hold and spend digital currencies, have also gotten better. Buyers can pay with their wallet of choice, with a great customer experience.

Built for real commerce

Bringing stablecoins to Shopify means redesigning payment systems to address real-world commerce needs. Merchants need payment systems that can handle complex transactions and checkout steps like tax finalization and inventory reservation. Shopify and Coinbase addressed these challenges with a first-of-its-kind smart contract: Merchants get the familiar “authorize now, capture later” flexibility of credit cards, with the speed and global reach of stablecoins.

A borderless, seamless future for payments

By embracing stablecoins, merchants aren’t just adopting a new payment method, they’re tapping into global markets, opening the door to global customers, and joining the future of borderless, accessible commerce.

Small businesses should be able to sell to a customer on the other side of the world as easily as their next-door neighbor. Shopify is committed to building a world where commerce flows as freely as ideas.
