Volkswagen is set to make significant changes to its electric lineup. In a recent interview with a British automotive publication, Kai Grünitz, Volkswagen’s Head of Technical Development, confirmed that the ID.3 and ID.4 will undergo major updates—starting with a fresh design language and the reintroduction of physical interior controls.

Grünitz stated that design cues from the ID.2all concept car will be integrated into both the ID.3 and ID.4 models. He also mentioned that the interiors would feature a revamped dashboard and interface, and notably, physical buttons and knobs will return. A company representative further revealed that a rotary dial for volume control will also be brought back.

These changes appear to be a direct response to widespread criticism of the user experience in Volkswagen’s MEB platform-based EVs, which rely heavily on touch-sensitive controls. Furthermore, Volkswagen has hinted at moving away from the ID. naming convention, signaling that both the ID.3 and ID.4 may eventually be replaced with entirely new models following these updates.

The refreshed ID.3 is expected to debut in Q2 of next year, while the updated ID.4 will be revealed by the end of 2026.
