A new WhatsApp beta for iOS (version 25.19.10.80) has revealed that Meta is working on a new threaded message replies feature. In fact, it’s not totally new because it has been seen in the Android betas, but this is the first time it has shown up in iOS builds. The feature aims to help organize message replies into structured conversations. This seems especially useful for any busy conversations where it’s difficult to keep track of replies.

According to WABetaInfo, this feature is still under active development and isn’t available for widespread testing in the beta builds just yet. It’s likely a hotly anticipated feature, so hopefully we’ll hear more about it being available for testing in the near future. Screenshots obtained by WABetaInfo show it in a functioning state.

Threaded replies in WhatsApp

Threaded replies like this are already available in apps such as Slack, so if you’ve had a chance to use them, then you’ll already have an idea of how this could end up looking.

When the feature is available, the message bubbles in your chats will show a small indicator with the number of replies in their thread. When you tap the indicator, it will open a new screen that allows users to view and add more messages to the thread.

The threaded messages feature isn’t just available for group chats; you can use it with individual chats, communities, and channels. This will make keeping up with threads super easy right across the app.

When threaded messages become available, conversation tracking and efficiency, especially in group chats, will get a boost as it removes the need to scroll through entire chat histories to find other responses. It could also help to reduce confusion when several people are having multiple concurrent discussions in a single group.

It’s still under development and not available to most beta testers yet, so if you’re on the stable WhatsApp, it’ll probably be a little while until it arrives on your device. There’s no confirmed arrival date for this, so it’s anybody’s guess when it’ll be ready.
