Frequently Asked Questions
How to Play
How do you play the Imposter Word Game?
It's simple! Everyone gets a secret word, except for one person—the Imposter. Players take turns giving one-word clues about the secret word. The Imposter must pretend they know the word and try to blend in. After a few rounds, everyone votes on who they think the Imposter is.
What is the goal of the game?
For most players (the "Civilians"), the goal is to identify and vote out the Imposter. For the Imposter, the goal is to survive the vote without being discovered. If they survive, they can score bonus points by guessing the secret word.
How many people do you need to play?
You need at least 4 players for a good game, but it's best with groups of 6 to 10. Our generator is flexible for any group size.
How do you win?
We recommend a simple point system. If the Civilians correctly vote out the Imposter, their team gets 1 point. If the Imposter survives the vote, they get 1 point, plus another bonus point if they correctly guess the secret word. Play as many rounds as you like!

Game Content & Tips
What are some good words to use for the game?
We've built a massive list of words organized by category and difficulty! Our generator includes everything from simple words for kids (like Pizza, Dog, School) to trickier ones for adults across categories like Movies, Technology, and even Silly & Random words.
Any tips for being a good Imposter?
Listen carefully to the first few clues to get an idea of the category. Give vague but plausible clues that could fit multiple concepts. For example, if you hear "cheesy" and "round," a good vague clue might be "party." Pay attention to how others give clues and try to mimic their confidence.
What are some fun variations of the game?
You can try different rules! For larger groups, add a second Imposter. You can also allow short phrases instead of single-word clues for more creativity, or choose a specific category (like "Animals") before generating a word to narrow the focus.
